The Karen Sued Me for Sex Ed

CH. 01

Chapter 1

4,430 words

The day after I taught a basic sex-ed module to my eighth graders, all hell broke loose.

The second I set foot on campus, an aggressive mother I vaguely recognized grabbed me by the arm and dragged me up the steps toward the flagpole in front of the school.

She held me in a vice grip. Right in front of arriving buses, students, and staff, she clicked on a loud megaphone.

"Look at this woman, everyone! Look at what kind of trash is teaching our kids these days!"

"She's corrupting our innocent children! She stood in front of my fourteen-year-old daughter and talked about disgusting, vulgar sex acts! She's turning my girl into a shameless degenerate!"

"She doesn't deserve a teaching license! I am filing an official report right now, and I demand the school fire her immediately!"

My head spun.

Since when did standard, curriculum-approved sex education count as preaching obscenity?

By the time other teachers and our dean separated us and ushered us into the front office, my ears were still ringing.

Was she seriously talking about me?

When did teaching biological facts become spreading filth?

When did I ever encourage kids to lose their minds and ruin their lives?

As a homeroom teacher for fourteen-year-olds who were right in the middle of puberty, I had always believed that what I said and did mattered deeply.

At an age when curiosity about their bodies naturally peaked, safe and honest education wasn't just helpful—it was non-negotiable.

Now this woman was slapping a hideous target onto my back, and I wasn't about to take it lying down.

Wanting to de-escalate things professionally, the other teachers and I tried to calm her down so we could understand what actually happened.

Through her hysterical, passive-aggressive rambling, we finally pieced it together.

She had found out that her daughter had a "crush" on a boy in the class.

"It has to be this teacher's fault!" she shrieked.

"My daughter is an angel! She's quiet, she follows rules! You must have put dirty thoughts in her head during class to make her chase after boys! She never would have done this on her own!"

To clear my name, I immediately pulled out the printed slides from yesterday's health presentation.

"Mrs. Davis, please look. This is the exact slide deck I used yesterday."

"Every single topic I covered is printed right here."

"I sent an outline to all the parents on whatsapp beforehand, and no one else raised a single concern."

"Could there be a misunderstanding?"

"I assure you, I would never preach anything inappropriate to my students."

Instead of looking at the papers, she snatched all twenty-odd pages and slammed them straight into my face.

The sharp paper edges sliced across my cheek, and the sheets fluttered across the floor.

"Ugh! Who wants to read this garbage? You think I'm as sick in the head as you are?"

Just then, our dean led her daughter into the office. On the way over, he had already asked the poor girl what was going on.

Her name was Lily Davis.

A quiet, top-performing girl who never caused any trouble.

She and another boy in class had a mutual crush. They walked along the same route home after school and sometimes texted each other about homework.

There was nothing inappropriate.

The closest thing to a "scandal" was a text wishing each other "sweet dreams."

The moment Mrs. Davis saw her daughter, she charged forward with her arm raised, aiming a slap right at Lily's face.

Thankfully, two male teachers lunged in and held her back just in time.

I looked at Lily.

She usually kept to herself, so I hadn't given her extra attention beyond her stellar grades.

Right now, she had her head down, completely emotionless, with a faint red welt already visible on her cheek. Her fingers were clenching the hem of her hoodie in absolute silence.

Contrasting with her mother's screaming, my heart broke for her.

"Mrs. Davis, I apologize if our curriculum caused any misunderstanding," the dean said, trying to smooth things over.

"But I can assure you Miss Vance had no ill intentions. She would never mislead your child."

I took a breath and backed him up.

"If the delivery of the lesson caught you off guard, I apologize for the shock. But these kids are fourteen. Understanding these topics is healthy and necessary."

She wasn't buying it.

She snatched a fallen slide off the floor and pointed at the bold header.

"'Consequences and Risks of Early Sexual Activity'! You dare say this isn't filthy?!"
