Humility Is Not Love

Karl’s plane went into a fatal dive. Over the emergency radio, he recorded his last words. “Babe, the will’s in the safe. Everything transfers to you. I set up a ten-million trust for our son.” Then the line reconnected. I was eight months pregnant, sobbing into the phone. Karl’s voice softened. “Hailey, my love… I’d give anything to come home to you two.”

I froze. Hailey wasn’t me. She was my adopted sister. I called my childhood friend. He sighed. “Hailey was drugged at a bar, Fiona. Karl saved her. The pregnancy was an accident, but he stepped up.”
