Tears Overwhelm Everything Else

Henry had firm rules for his charity. Four years together, my independence made me his lowest priority. Maya, his recently divorced colleague, earned all his time as a struggling single mother. He fetched her medicine at 2 A.M., built furniture on weekends, and played stand-in dad at her son’s sports day. Confront him, and he’d scoff. Just helping her. Why envy a single mother?

Yesterday, my father’s heart attack demanded a $5,000 deposit. Pale and trembling, I called Henry. He hesitated. Broke this month. I gripped the bill. What about Friday’s $6,000 bonus? He stammered.
